One of my main qualms with many mainstream stories are the happy endings. (Don't get me wrong, I love a good chick flick, but I'm looking for something a bit sadder.) Obviously not all the characters have to be utterly miserable, but I'd prefer a bleaker ending, as to me the story and the struggle is worth more.
Alternatively, recommend any reads that mean a lot to you/got you through a difficult time.
One book I read recently: One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich by Solzhenitsyn (loved it) Currently reading: Dead Souls by Gogol (not too sad so far tbh but still enjoying it) Was recommended: Metamorphosis, but haven't got round to reading it yet.
