Fairies seem to be in right now but frankly I've always kinda found them boring. I read A Court of Thorns and Roses and yeah, didn't leave much of an impression on me. The closest I've come to enjoying fae is the Blackthorn and Grim series in which they're kinda helpful or villainous in turns, but that was still primarily about the human characters not the fairies.

What am I missing? I'm open to any option from cute to overdramatic court drama, just something that helps me get it.

Emily Wilde’s Encyclopaedia of Fairies is a bit of a different take, you might enjoy it

ACOTAR is so bad. I couldn’t handle it. I’m really enjoying Holly Black’s fairie books. There’s quite a few standalones and the Crue Prince series.

They’re certainly secondary, but Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files follow a Wizard PI (he’s in the phone book) who at one point recruits some faries to help him. As he arranges for a regular supply of food for them in exchange for their aid, he gains the title “The Pizza Lord!” and the fairies are keen to follow him.
Of course, he also has to deal with the Fae of both Summer and Winter courts and they’re… a bit more complex to deal with.

the Wondertales series by Charlotte E English is fun, not romance, just fairy tales for grown ups.

    5. *Pact* by Wildbow is surprisingly dark (TW: all), rife with fae and has some hilarious goblins.
