Received a call from my mother asking if I know about any non-fiction books out there that a fourteen-year-old girl who has just come out would consider a life saver. One book we discussed was Real Girl, Real World, which is great in general and addresses adolescent queerness, but it's almost twenty years old and we wonder if there's something more updated out there.
So I said, "Hey, there's Reddit. Someone probably knows something we don't."
For some background: my niece recently came out as gay and lives in a state that is not LGBTQIA+ friendly as well as religiously oppressive, so she doesn't have access to a lot of resources or local communities she can turn to for advice. Aside from her family and a few others, not a lot of people know about her sexual orientation because (surprise!) it isn't exactly safe to be out. My mother wants to do what she can and thought giving her a non-fiction book written by someone who is LGBT for someone is LGBT might help her for the rollercoaster experience of high school next fall.
If anyone knows of a book that fits the bill, or:
– A book that saved their lives as a teenager.
– A book they wish they had read as a teenager.
By all means, let us know!
