BIPOC authors/themes

(Black/Indigenous People of Color) Shocked/disappointed to find that Goodreads doesn’t seem to have a single tag or genre or list relevant to finding authors of this demographic. Seriously am I missing something??? I looked all over. If it is in fact true that no such list exists on Goodreads, let’s start a list of recommendations here!

Some books I’ve read in the last couple years and loved include: There There by Tommy Orange, Another Country by James Baldwin, Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer, Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, and How to be Anti racist by Abram X Kendi. Black Elk Speaks loosely fits this category, because although it was written by a white man, it was transcribed from lengthy interviews with Black Elk, and is considered foundational in the category of Indigenous Lit. Basically, I’m just doing my best to listen to the voices our society has worked to silence.

Also just want to say I’m open to books from other cultures beyond Black and Indigenous. Being in the US, I feel BIPOC issues are the most pressing socially, but I know there is value in hearing stories from all cultures of the world. For instance, I also got a huge awakening reading The Open Veins of Latin America by Eduardo Galeano, and Khaled Hosseini is one of my favorite fiction authors. So if you have recs from *any* culture that feel aligned with my journey, please share!

Was pleased to see there are TONS of tags on
Goodreads for queer folx (Gay, Queer, LGBTQ, just plain ol Lesbian, you name it, they got a tag for it), so even though I also like to seek out that perpective I don’t think I need any explicit guidance in that category (but if you are feeling especially jazzed about something, you know the deal! Drop a rec! I’m always open).
