I'm in my early 30s and my mother has recently been diagnosed with advanced melanoma. Things are looking rather bleak and I'm nowhere near ready to live the rest of my life without her. I'm really looking for something that deals with healing from unexpected loss. Something that shows happiness can be found again while living with crippling grief would be great.

First of all, I’m so sorry for your situation and wish you all the best. I don’t know if a fiction book is exactly what you’re after, but I would highly highly recommend ‘A Monster Calls’ by Patrick Ness. My mom passed away from a relatively unexpected illness a little over 12 years ago. I read this book earlier this year and it had me absolutely bawling at the end. It’s an absolutely beautiful story with such a powerful message about dealing with grief and loss, and even after almost a decade, changed my perspective on my situation. I’d also definitely recommend buying a copy if possible, it’s filled with some really great illustrations.
