I've always loved fiction about vigilantism, because I find it to be a really fascinating examination of concepts of justice and morality, and also really cathartic. However, most vigilante fiction I've read has come across as mostly mindless action stories, while the vigilante characters I find myself more drawn to are those like Batman and Dexter, where their stories mostly feel like classic noir and detective stories, but with a detective who operates distinctly outside the law to dispense justice, and who is himself hunted as a criminal. If anyone knows any books like this, following a vigilante being hunted by the law while investigating a crime and punishing its perpetrators, let me know.
