I loved it. I got attached to the characters in the same way I did to those in the Harry Potter series.
My favorite authors are Steinbeck and Cormac McCarthy.
I'm usually drawn to dark literature. Donald Ray Pollack's works were right up my alley.
I liked She's Come Undone and I Know the Much is True by Wally Lamb.
I couldn't get through Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. I hated every page and gave up 2/3 through, so no philosophy recs, please.
Loved It, The Stand, and 11.22.64 by King.
Loved Crime and Punishment, but couldn't get through Brothers Karasomov.
I don't really like fantasy genre.

Lonesome Dove starts a series. Streets of Laredo is the next book.
Jane Smiley’s trilogy that starts with Some Luck or her stand alone A Thousand Acres
Have you read The Hour I First Believed, by Wally Lamb?
If you like darker Western in the McCarthy vein, Butcher’s Crossing and Warlock are both classics that likely influenced him. Nonfiction (or at least not outright fiction), but Chamberlain’s My Confession is the account of the Glanton gang (and the Judge!) on which Blood Meridian is based.
