As has everyone else, I've seen plenty of movies about crimes and spies. But I'd like to know what really happens and what doesn't. The best way I can think of to find out is to read about it.
I'd love suggestions for books about high profile crimes and criminals, solved or unsolved, or even thrillers about spies. I want real stories with all the details of the situation. I want to learn about how they were caught or how the investigation was conducted. I want to learn about the culture of the region in which the story takes place and the culture which shaped the characters involved. I'm also open to biographies or autobiographies of criminals, spies, and perhaps even law enforcement, local or federal. In short, I want to understand how criminals and spies (and to some extent law enforcement) operate in the real world.
I'd prefer the time frame of the event(s) in the story to be 1950 or after. I want to prioritize books set in the United States, since that's my home and I understand the culture better, but I will also read stories from other countries.
