The popular books that I end up DNFing are those where the protagonist seems like they don't really care, they're dragged along with the plot, they never make a decision, or they generally have a lukewarm emotional range.
Recommend me your favorite books where the protagonist has a wide range of emotions, is deeply invested in the story, and drives the plot with their decisions.
One stipulation: the emotional investment must be something other than romance!
