I’m somewhat new to the world of reading for fun and I’m looking to expand my book options. While my taste has been limited by the fact the I’m attracted to non-fiction books, I have recently enjoyed some books of other genres such as 1984, The Alchemist, Old Man and the Sea, Bull Mountain, and The Martian (pretty basic I know). My girlfriend is pushing me to read things outside my comfort zone and to explore more. I’m trying to lean into that. I’m looking for a fiction book that paints vivid pictures for the reader while also telling a meaningful, interesting story. I’m a fiend for conflict and stories that keep you on the edge of your seat. Any suggestions?

    1. Blake Crouch’s man-on-the-run thriller **Dark Matter**. It has a light sci-fi basis.

It’s a slow burn, but the book Under The Whispering Door has some magical realism elements and a really meaningful story.

Black butterflies by Priscilla Morris tells the story of the Saravejo siege in a really emotional way. Really vivid scenes and absolutely touching. Also, really interesting story, I learned so much from it and could be a great choice, specially if some of the non-fiction you enjoy is historical. The only thing is that it is more of a frog in boiling water story, not the fast-paced full of conflict type.
