The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers. It’s a southern Gothic novel about a lonely deaf man and the people he meets and some he befriends because they have loneliness in common. It’s set in the 1930’s, so Depression era. One of my favorites.

Or The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway. Set during the Spanish-Italian war, about an American soldier. I don’t think I breathed at all during the last chapter, so tragic.
