All the novels I hear have good magic/power systems and fight scenes seem to mostly take place in a similar generic fantasy world and it’s just not something that interests me much. I’d love to see one that takes place in a more modern or even futuristic setting, just something a bit more unique, but it’s hard to come by. The concept of how a world similar to ours would respond and adapt to any sort of supernatural abilities really interests me, but it’s rarely attempted in Novels, only manga really. I’m not necessarily looking for that, just something with a more unique setting than a regular magical fantasy world. Is there anything you can recommend?

    1. The Scholomance trilogy by Naomi Novik – it’s urban fantasy that starts off in a magic school, then expands into the rest of the modern world & its magical offshoots.

The Locked Tomb by Tamsyn Muir – new zealand space fantasy thousands of years in the future centered around our galaxy & necromancer magic

    2. The Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee might be worth checking out.

It’s set in a modern day Asian inspired island nation, the books focus more on international politics as the series progresses and the impact the magic system has on the world.

The core of the story follows a generation of a family dealing with inheriting power reminiscent of The Godfather.

If you’ve got any questions let me know and I’ll try my best to help.

I’m really enjoying Pale by Wildbow. It follows three young girls/teenagers as they become aware of a world of magic, monsters, and conspiracy. Juggling things like homework and first boyfriends with world ending magical threats. It’s set in real world Canada, but obviously has supernatural elements as well! And also has alternate magical dimensions as well.
