Hi, I'm trying to get back into reading. I want to be able to communicate and articulate myself better, and eventually understand more literature and complicated reads. I'm a native speaker, but I noticed that my vocabulary is stagnant, and I feel ashamed about it.

I grew up reading The Boxcar Children, Goosebumps, and American Chillers. As I got older, I enjoyed reading The Tyrant's Daughter and a few of Melissa Grey's works, like The Girl at Midnight and Shadow Hour. I also read quite a lot of historical fiction when I was younger. For context, I am now 20 years old and in college. I feel like my comprehension and writing is getting worse.

Recently, I tried to read Americanah. Although it was an easier read, the plot was boring to me. Then, I decided to read Frankenstein and was humbled. I read only the first letter and was able to grasp a few things by the end of the letter, but the beginning of the letter didn't make much sense to me.

I find myself discouraged because I feel behind compared to my peers. I just want to be able to understand wordy/flowery language a lot better.

Do you have any recommendations for a beginner reader so I can slowly ease myself into reading more challenging books?
