Recently went to a Goodwill and found a HUGE Mercedes Lackey collection. At least 15 or so books all with the same girls name written inside. I’m not sure why, but I just felt so sad and hurt for the collector. Plus they are all hardcovers and the 80’s dust jackets with technicolor art are just so cool looking. So of course I bought five of this random woman’s books.
Sadly I couldn’t take them all, but here are the books I got:
Winds of Fate,
Winds of Change,
Winds of Fury
(A trilogy I assume), and
By the Sword
And another book from the collector titled Shadowgate, written by Kate Elliott
Any spoiler free summaries of these books, opinions on the author and her novels, and just overall thoughts are appreciated! Keep in mind I have no idea what these books are about, the blurbs on the dust jackets aren’t very helpful.

Enjoy them, they are good reads! I’ve read most of her work and enjoyed all of them!
Mercedes Lackey is one of the first fantasy authors I read and I have nearly all of her books – the Valdemar series, of which the Winds trilogy is part – is perhaps one of my favorite series. It is towards the end of the main books (there are a number of short story anthologies that follow) and By the Sword should be read before the Winds books, it will help put some of the story in perspective for you. If you can get some of the other Valdemar books (Arrows trilogy, especially), it will help, but I think you will enjoy them – it is a mix of adventure, magic, and just plain good story, about the daughter of the Queen, Elspeth, who discovers that she is a mage and goes to find a mysterious tribe called the Hawkbrothers for training. By The Sword is about a mercenary named Kerowyn, who also becomes part of the Valdemar cycle and that is her story.
