When I was younger I had a sort of book club going on with my mom, where we read the same book each on their own and then talk about it. this was really fun, but I struggle to find books that my mom enjoys anymore.
she really likes fantasy books and crime novels, especially if they are a nice mix of humor and drama. She doesn't like it if it gets to difficult to understand, like complicated magic systems or political intrigue. She also struggles with big character ensembles or complicated names. Those tend to be concepts I enjoy, so it's difficult for me to gauge which books would interest her.
She really liked the books by Jonathan Stroud (Lockwood & Co, Bartimaeus Sequence), Harry Potter, the early Percy Jackson (before the character cast grew too large). She also liked Sci-fi books like those by Andy Weir (even though the technical aspect of the books was really challenging, she enjoyed the humor).
Currently we're reading Babel by R.F. Kuang, although I'm noticing that she has trouble understanding the magic system.
What books could we read together?
