I recently picked up "The Other Typist" by Suzanne Rindell, and I was immediately drawn into it. I believe that part of the reason I enjoy her works (including Three Martini Lunch) is because she is well educated in storytelling, sentence structure, and has an expansive vocabulary that allows her to express exatcly what she intends to express. She has a PhD in English, so this makes sense.
I recently finished other books written by people who either only had a high school diploma, or "some university" (only one of them finished university). While I loved their perspectives and stories, it is quite obvious that they didn't have an advanced literary education. I feel a little bad for saying that, but it was noticeably when compared to Suzanne Rindell (who has a PhD in English) or Mary Doria Russell (PhD in Paleoanthropology).
What are some good recommendations? I'm open to almost all genres outside of romance.
