I’ve always loved reading but only recently have I come to really fall into a habit with it as an adult and begin to cultivate my taste in literature. I’m pretty aware of a lot of the superclassics and am totally open to reading those, and I know looking into my favorite authors favorite authors is another good starting point, but based off the handful of books i’ve read recently and the reasons I’ve liked them, I’m looking for some reccomendations I probably would never have thought of

1.) Blood Meridian – I love Cormac’s prose, the way he paints a picture with his words, not so much his philosophy, (although I think he certainly has depth here and BM was a perfect intersection of this) is my favorite thing about his writing.

2.) Stoner – John Williams’ Stoner was a fantastic read. I really enjoyed it for how mundane and simple it felt, while exploring the complexities of life.

3.) The Stranger – I love how simple Camus writes and yet the imagery I conjure in my mind is so vivid I feel as if I can smell the city and beach as he writes it. I’ve never felt as teleported to a world as I did here, and his philosophy is obviously just so beautifully interwoven into the fabric of the story. Feels almost cinematic in a sense, for better or for worse.

4.) Miss Lonelyhearts – Nate Hill’s writing is super engaging here and oftentimes funny. It feels weirdly drug induced at moments and has some great characters with thematic identity. Just awesome.

5.) Don Cheever’s shorts – Don does a great job hitting you with a sentence that feels like a bomb drop of insight into a character or feeling.

6.) Frankenstein – This was something I read nearly a decade ago, but I consider it the catalyst for my desire to read Lit Fic and it’s always stuck with me as such a beautiful novel. I love the world and feeling.

that’s about all I can articulate right now and I’m very tired. I’m hoping that I can get some recommendations on authors or books that you feel like based off what I’ve said here would be something to add to my list. Thank you all for your time.

    1. Have you read any of Annie Proulx yet? She writes with fantastic economic prose. Try “The Shipping News.”

“Cold Mountain,” by Charles Frazier might appeal.
