Hello everyone.
As a young teenage girl I loved to read, and read THOUSANDS of crappy young adult books. However for the past decade I have struggled with mental health issues and haven’t really had the strength to commit to a book. Now that I’m 25, it’s been a decade and don’t really know where to start and whenever I go to the book shop I get completely overwhelmed and don’t know what to look for.
I can remember I used to love (in no particular order):
– the whole shatter me series by Tahereh Mafi
– the selection series by Kiera Cass
– Blue Bloods series by Melissa de la Cruz
– anything and everything by Michelle Read
– the mortal instruments (especially the prequel series with Tessa and Will and Jem)
– Divergent series
– The Maze Runner series
– The Darkest Minds
– Strange Angels series
– a series I can’t find anymore neither in my home nor online – it was set in a fantasy world, where some poor girl awakened her powers on accident and turned out to be very powerful. All I can remember is that they had to listen to the outside, then inside the room and then inside their bodies as a part of the magic awaking? She could join one of the 3 specialties at that school and had an affair with one of the teachers. She got into bad, evil forbidden magic. Whatever they were fighting against came, destroyed their whole city – her and her teacher lover had to escape though some desert and that’s all I can remember. Bonus points if you know what book that was lol I think it had a hooded mage on the cover.
And many many more. I used to love some fantasy, some post apocalyptic themes.
I’d love to hear some recommendations based on this list, but maybe a little bit more mature? The selection is my feel good series so if there’s anything similar I’d love to know about it.
Thanks for reading,
V

Our Book Club read A Court of Thorns and Roses. It was not for me but they LOVED the series. It is Fantasy genre
The Discworld series by Terry Pratchett is my go to when I’m struggling with depression. It’s funny and philosophical and not mean I’d suggest starting with Guards! Guards!
For dystopian books, you could try The Water Knife by Paolo Bacigalupi.
