      * Anything by Peter Brandvold, but especially books in his Yakima Henry series. The action is fast and colorful. And when his main character crosses the border into Mexico, it’s as if Robert E. Howard had set Conan in the Wild West.
      * Valdez is Coming by Elmore Leonard. Then all the rest of his Westerns.
      * Black Hat Jack by Joe R. Lansdale.
      * Tripwire by Brian Garfield. Then all the rest of his Westerns. Best known as the author of Death Wish.
      * True Grit by Charles Portis.
      * The Day the Cowboys Quit by Elmer Kelton.

    2. The Sackett series of Lamour . The Berrybender Books by Mccmurtry . I consider Last of the Mohicans a western. Wild Times, Garfield , Riders of the Purple Sage , Zane Grey. The Sacketts aren’t a true series. But with the internet they will give you the right order for reading. Other books by Grey are hit and miss for me . Elmore Leonard wrote westerns and I’ve never read them but enjoy all his other work immensely. Max Brands most Famous book is Destry Rides Again. As with Grey he is kind of hit and miss with me.

Try the Cole & Hitch series by Robert B. Parker

If “weird west” and ultraviolence is your thing, try The Magpie Coffin by Wile E. Young
