I thought “Want Me” was very interesting, autobiography of a young woman navigating life culture and sex. “Endgame” about the life of chess legend Bobby Fisher was a hard read at times but really fascinating, especially because of the historical context of the cold war. If she likes longer ones, both American Prometheus and Napoleon: A Life gave such personal and intimate insight into the lives of these great and rather complicated men. And if she likes obscure stuff, there’s a great biography about a Swedish aristocrat using his small plane to fly food into Biafra in the 60’s, written by his daughter in law called “An Airborne Knight-Errant”. If she likes history told differently I really loved “Major Whittlesey and Cher Ami”, about a major in WW1 and about a mail carrier pigeon (the pigeon tells her own story too, takes some suspension of belief to get into but it’s lovely and the pigeon was totally real, and the major as well). They’re both gay in the story which the major was, the pigeon wasn’t, and it just tells a fragile and tragic story of these characters lost in a pointless battle in this horrific war. Weird but great.
