I am looking for some historical fiction set in the UK or Ireland. I want some thing that is fast paced and doesn't have fantasy elements. Romance is fine and I would prefer a male protagonist. I would also like it to be just one book instead of a series.

C J Sansom’s Shardlake books are fantastic, but you could just read one. A hunchbacked lawyer solving crimes in Tudor England. Dissolution is the first one but any one stands up on its own.
