looking at my reading log it seems most of the books i have read the last decade or so are by lady writers (lorrie moore, zadie smith, patricia highsmith, claire keegan, these types) and the books by dudes i've read have mostly been genre fiction (blake crouch or stephen king sorta trash) or older books (from the russians to steinbeck, camus, mishima, blah blah blah)

There are some exceptions (whitehead and junot the biggest. also read a lot of ishiguro and murakami but not too crazy bout em) i've latched onto but the majority of literary fiction by male authors i read are just rando books that i come across here and there.

looking for recs for less-popular dude authors that are off my radar (names like denis johnson or paul auster or franzen or whatever i already know of) and have passed me by while i've been filling my bookshelves with other stuff the last 25 years. i tend to prefer shorter books to long ones and writing that doesn't feel like it came out of an mfa program but from an authentic unmolested human writer's mind
