* Rule 34 by Charles Stross (near future, do not judge it by the title!) and Accelerando by Charles Stross (far future, about the singularity)
* Lady of Mazes by Karl Schroeder. Set so far in the future, the very fabric of reality is unrecognizable.
* Autonomous by Annalee Newitz
* The Imperial Radch series by Ann Leckie. You can start either with Ancillary Justice or with Provenance. These are about AI.
* A Closed and Common Orbit by Becky Chambers. It is second in a series, but for the most part works as a standalone novel. It follows the story of side characters introduced in the first book, one of whom is an AI.
* Not a novel, but a novella about AI. The Life Cycle of Software Objects by Ted Chiang.
* Rainbows End by Vernor Vinge. About AI and technological change over time.
* Blindsight and Echopraxia by Peter Watts. Blindsight is available as a free ebook on the author’s website. These are hard sci fi horror about the singularity. Supposedly the author is working on a third book in this series, Omniscience, but we have no info about when it might be out.
* The Culture series by Iain M. Banks. Not modern, but this author was way ahead of his time so a lot of what he wrote feels a lot more recent than it actually is. This series can be read out of order. I typically recommend people start with The Player of Games, but feel free to pick a different one to start with if it sounds more interesting. Excession focuses a lot on how the AIs in charge are running the Culture, but I have heard it’s very confusing to start with that one.
* Klara and the Sun by Kazuo Ishiguro. Recently published book about AI.
* The Murderbot Diaries by Martha Wells. A collection of short, fun novellas. Very modern.
