Looking for a dark fantasy world with gritty realism. Some George R. R. Martin levels of character preservation would be nice.

While waiting for the next book in A Song of Ice and Fire, I need my fix. I would really like to find something that isn't afraid of spelling out the darkness of humanity. Perhaps something like Mad Max but less predictable.
