Flipping through a new book/author for initial impression. My favorite topics are history and also historical fiction and detective series like Michael Connelly/Harry Bosch. I prefer a ratio of about 50-50 at minimum. Only 25% dialogue is fine. (History is obviously primarily descriptive.)
Some highly regarded fiction authors write 80%-plus dialogue. Certainly their works cannot be faulted, but there is something about greater balance between dialog and description that seems to elevate most writing. Opinions?
