Basically what it says on the title- I'm looking for some old realism books about the middle class/with middle class protagonists (preferably written by a middle class author) around the time period of the 1700s to early-mid 1900s. To specify, I'm looking for more of an Agnes Grey than a Jane Eyre- so something more heavy on social commentary than philosophizing.
I'm fine with any country of origin, as long as there's a good (hopefully better than decent), easy to access English translation out there.
(in case you're worried your recommendation is too boring, Stoner is one of my favourite novels. I'm sure I will be fine)
