Just read Shuggie Bain, Demon Copperhead, and A Little Life in quick succession– I love the emotional depth and quality of the writing, but boy do they plumb the depths of human depravity. I'm in need of a story where I can assume the characters I encounter are fundamentally good instead of constantly holding my breath in anticipation of them doing something awful. Not necessarily something that's fluffy and feel-good, but something where most people have good hearts and generally do the right thing. Any suggestions?
