I'm looking for a western novel that is brutal and real. Not a run of the mill fairy tale story where the hero wins. I was violence, and crime, and a focus on the dark side of the American frontier… But also tasteful. Not just brutal for the sake of it, but because it adds something.

Think of the show Godless but darker.
