There is something melancholic and meditative about being lonely and depressed in a big city.. everywhere you look, there are tons of people, living their own (seemingly) happy lives. Yet yours is empty, and you feel like you are but an inconsequential blur. You go to bed, alone, the sounds and sirens of the city still distantly audible, aware that even if you do not wake up the next morning, the city will, and nothing would change.

^ that's the vibe I am looking for. I recently read Norwegian Wood and All the Lovers in the Night that dealt with similar themes, and I liked them both for the most part. Please give more recs so that I can continue to romanticize my own empty existence 🙂

The Lonely City: Adventures in the Art of Being Alone by Olivia Laing , it’s on my TBR so I can’t vouch for the quality but based on the description I think it fits what you are looking for!

Bright Lights Big City. It’s a classic and fits what you’re describing really well
