I never quite got into gaming, although I tried a few times.
There are a couple of games that I wish I could experience as books.
One of those is Darkest Dungeon.
I am looking for a book where a band of misfits fights eldritch horror.
Ideally the main characters would not be unambiguously good people, or super overpowered. It would be nice if they were clever rather than simply the most brilliant swordsmen in the world.
Ideally the characters wouldn't be royalty either? There's a bias in fantasy that the main characters are frequently royalty, and I don't like the idea that only royals have interesting things happen to them.
What I am not looking for: Lord of the Rings, Sword of Shannara, etc. I don't want to read about a massive end times battle between good and evil. Also, not looking for anything like the Witcher series (Geralt is pretty unambiguously good, and super overpowered).
Also, please no prophecies or "chosen one" main characters, even if the book is in some way inverting those tropes.
Please nothing with any sexual violence. I read for fun; that's not fun.
I recognize I am asking a lot, but also if the monsters could be something other than the usual fantasy tropes (vampires, werewolves, etc.) that would be amazing. Some of the joy in reading stuff like this is when authors come up with neat new monsters.
I've already read the Deltora Quest series, which meets some of what I asked for.
