I’m looking for books that go over the social and sexual behaviour of animals – preferably lions or primates or similar large mammals. Something that details the real, gritty aspects of how they form societies, how their young are raised, how they fight for territory, how they form societies and it’s leadership, aspects of sexual selection etc.

The search words you need are ‘animal ethology’ as this is the study of the behaviours you mention. If you look under this on any book site, you’ll get loads of suitable titles.
Specifically, if you want books on primates, your go-to is Jane Goodall, famous primatologist and anthropologist. She writes well and any of her titles would be worth a read.
