I have been putting off reading Pratchett for a long time. I finished the City Watch arc of books recently, and loved it. I've never read anything like this-yes, in terms of humor, Douglas Adams may just be better, but the way Sir Terry combines so much depth of thought and wisdom with satire, humor, and a simplicity of writing style and characterization, is simply beautiful.

However, I also need a break before I can go back to reading more Discworld. The writing style and general effect of the books can be quite overwhelming.

What books would you recommend I read before I go back to the Discworld? I don't want to read something in the same style of writing, ie, with witty references, jokes, etc at almost every line-I don't want that.

But I do want something that has depth of thought, the love for humanity and life that so clearly shone through Sir Terry's writing, as well as the anger-and something which has superb characterization and pacing. The beauty of Sir Terry's characterization was that the characters did not leap off the page, they felt like they were always there in the room with us.

Tldr; Need to read a book to take a break from Discworld, which book(s) combines the love, the anger, simplicity, superb characterization and great plot pacing, without having a similar writing style, ie not a predominantly humorous or satirical writing style? Preferably fantasy genre, though I'm okay with almost any genre.
