      *Death of a Salesman* by Arthur Miller might be a good fit for you. It’s a play though, not a novel, in case you were specifically looking for a novel.

      i have not read it, but have heard it is literally him just drinking himself to death.

    3. The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes might partially fit this.

      The main character’s friend commits suicide at the start and this is explored in the novel including his psyche leading up to his suicide.

    4. The Picture of Dorian Grey, Oscar Wilde
      The Private Memoirs and Confessions of a Justified Sinner, James Hogg (also one of my favourite novels of all time)

      Both of these are also excellent choices for any psychology student.

    5. Tons of Albert Camus’ work. The plague is great. Almost all his writings, one one way or another, contemplates the meaning of life and idea of suicide. It’s more from a philosophical sense then depression though.
