Recently read and was thoroughly charmed by Fresh Water For Flowers. While pleasantly slow paced it has many elements which steadily and engagingly unfold – a mystery surrounding the heartbreaking tragedy central to the main character, Violet, romances which span generations and intertwine the key characters, places, friendships which enable redemption and healing after great loss. Nicely observed poetry of everyday life, as Violet moves to become a cemetry keeper after striking up a profound friendship with the retiring keeper, helping her come to terms with grief and the failure of her unhappy, unfulfilling marriage. A novel with humour, emotional insight, charm in the everyday set against bigger mysteries and relationships. Suggestions for similar or books this put in mind of eagerly welcomed.
