I’m only two chapters in but I just can’t get into it. I’ve loved Steinbeck’s other works, but I just can’t seem to connect with this one. I find it a bit strange that the narrator is Steinbeck himself and I’m worried I’ll have trouble with that farther into the book. Also I usually don’t mind racism in older books, but the intense racism against Native Americans a couple pages in really threw me off as I’ve never seen that from Steinbeck before. I’ve also just been kinda bored and I’m not sure if this is what I thought it was. I finished Lonesome Dove a couple years ago and it completely consumed my life for the time I was reading it and months after. I picked this up because I’m craving a similar reading experience as I haven’t had one since. Am I going to get that from this book? If so, around what chapter would you say it picks up?

The first half is a sprawling backstory about a bunch of different characters and stories. then the second half focuses on one person in particular, you see him struggle between good and bad, see his guilt, how he deals with mistreatment and his own actions.
