No jumping back and forth in the timeline, simple. No foreshadowing! I HATE when a narrator says nonsense like “and I’d live to deeply regret that choice…” and you find yourself pushing through 300 pages of a book you’d have easily given up on just to find out how they’d regret the choice. It’s always so disappointing.
Basically a story that pushes forward and keeps you hooked on the sheer strength of the plot and the writing. No stupid gimmick to keep you turning the page.
Preferably written in last 50 years and not depressing. No series either because life’s too short.
