So Adam’s last word is “Timshel” after he finds out what Cal did. “Timshel” as mentioned previously in the book means “thou may”. I think this is Adam saying that Cal had the choice of bad and good but he chose the bad anyways. It’s the last form of rejection he places on Cal and frankly it’s dreadful. I liked Adam until 3/4 way in, when he became inattentive to Cal. I feel so bad for Cal. It’s funny how Steinbeck takes the Cain and Abel story, where we dislike Cain a lot, and flips it on its head. I actually felt a lot of sympathy for Cal and disliked Aaron very very much. That’s my interpretation though, I’m interested to hear someone else’s take on this.
