Have you noticed how the ratings given for a series of books usually start low, improve to a peak around book 3-5, and then sometimes tail off? Do you think that’s because authors always get better as a series goes on, but eventually run out of ideas whilst still having a book-deal/bills to pay?

I wonder if the improvement at the start is as much to do with self-selection. By which I mean that people who hated the first one, and scored it low, won’t pick up the second one. So there’s an automatic reduction in low-star reviews for later books. As the series finds its audience, the reviews are bound to be better.
