First off I’m so shocked that this trilogy doesn’t have an active fanbase online! Its got so much going for it—super interesting world with super interesting magic, lots of casual POC and disability representation, 95% female cast in a fantasy world where women are able to occupy positions of power, several wlw couples (and homophobia doesn’t seem to exist), really awesome and dynamic fight scenes, a super competent and interesting protagonist, nuns that can and will kill you, plus a story that is at its heart, driven by the power of friendship. What’s not to love!

Anyway, I read it years ago and have reread several times and have yet to come across another book that hits the same spot. A lot of people recommend Nevernight as something similar, but even though it has a lot of plot similarities it doesn’t quite have the same feel.

I’m not necessarily looking for things that have similar plot or world elements. I’m just looking for more fantasy stories with:

    • a lot of women
    • diverse ensemble cast
    • more focus on friendship or found family than romance
    • cool magic (or sci fi equivalent) and/or fights
    • a protagonist that is interesting and not an Everyman blank slate self insert

    Anyone have recommendations?
