Books that hook you hard in the first chapter?

A couple books that I'll go back and re-read the first chapter or two just because they open with such a bang:

• Snow Crash by neal stephenson – probably my number one re-read
• Project Hail Mary
• Head On (or pretty much any of Scalzi's stuff)
• We are bob
• Ringworld (the original)

I realize that entire list is sci fi, but I do enjoy other genres – mystery especially. Any suggestions are super welcome!!
