My daughter will be 14 next month and starts high school in August. She is struggling with reading and comprehension and does not like to read (not sure which one causes the other). This summer my wife and I are going to read a few books together with her to try and reduce the “summer slump”.
Today is the deadline for her to pick a book, so it looks like I will decide. So now I need help finding something age appropriate that we can all read together. We burned through a few “pop culture” suggestions (Harry Potter, hunger games, etc) which she adamantly refused. I’m a big fan of the classics, but I don’t want to push my preferences on her.
YA, historical fiction, fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, it’s all on the table. I only draw the line at graphic sex or graphic violence. A series would be cool, but not necessary. Bonus points for anything that promotes self-worth and letting go of other people’s opinions (without being overly obvious). Bonus bonus if we laugh/cry/or gasp while reading.
