I genuinely want to read a book from female perspective that really goes into the depths of human feelings, is relatable, troubled and has a dark story. Romance would be fine and fantasy too. I don't like characters who are the unrealistic chosen ones though so yes I'd be happy for any recommendations!

My Sister the Serial Killer is a great short read!
One of my fav books of all time is **American War** by Omar Al Akkad. It is set in a near-ish future, where a climate-ravaged US is mired in a second Civil War, this time over fossil fuels. It’s basically the same sides (North v South), and the book follows a southern girl named Sarat, who begins as a bright and curious young girl, poor but happy, living with her family in a shipping container near the northern border. When war comes to their doorstep, the family is forced to make some heartbreaking choices and Sarat grows up amidst the boredom and horror of war. The book follows her through adulthood and death, and though you will be unable to condone the monstrous choices she’s made by the end of her life, you won’t be able to help wondering if you would have done the exact same thing.
I’d say about a third of the book is childhood, then the rest is her as an adult. There’s a quick tryst near the beginning of the adult part, but not much else romance-wise for the main character. It’s a beautiful, sweeping southern gothic about the long term costs of war – something we should all be considering amidst the wars around the world right now.
The Cruel Prince by Holly Black – it gets hyped online for enemies to lovers, but honestly that’s a relatively minor aspect. It’s really a story about trauma. The main character has endured so much and has grown up with the knowledge that she is in constant danger. The book explores how that trauma has effected her and the things she has to do to survive
Gillian Flynn is the author you want!
