His Dark Materials, the trilogy by Philip Pullman is a wonderful complex but accessible story with perhaps the best young female protagonist in the page ever written. There’s much to discuss and it will enthrall parent as well as child. In the UK the first book is called Northern Lights, but most elsewhere it is known as The Golden Compass. There’s also a making full cast audiobook performance of the book, where Pullman himself is the narrator.
Other books:
Bread Winner trilogy by Ellis
Shadow Spinner by Fletcher
Just about any book by Kate DiCamillo

I’d say The Hunger Games series is one. It’s definitely a good series both adults and children can enjoy. The Maze Runner too.

Do you have any overlapping interests? If you both like sci-fi, I would suggest *Scythe* by Neal Shusterman (book 1 of his Arc of the Scythe series).

people here have made some great recs! especially his dark materials/[the golden compass.](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/119322.The_Golden_Compass?ac=1&from_search=true&qid=QInLyUPoCt&rank=1) here are just a couple more
if you want to go more modern/YA, [the hunger games](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2767052-the-hunger-games?ref=nav_sb_ss_1_16) and [maze runner](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6186357-the-maze-runner?ref=nav_sb_ss_1_11) are always great (like somebody said). or if you want to go a little edgier and weirder, the [gone](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2536134.Gone?ref=nav_sb_ss_5_4) series is one of my personal favs (amazingly diverse cast of characters, weird magic, just truly a wild ride)
if you want to go a more classics direction, my dad read [the hobbit](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/5907.The_Hobbit?ref=nav_sb_ss_1_10) with me around that age (or maybe a little younger) and i really liked it. i never got into the rest of LOTR, but there you are. also this isn’t a series, but [watership down](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/76620.Watership_Down?ref=nav_sb_ss_1_14) is just a fantastic story, really surprisingly interesting and thought provoking, and great for all ages.
or if she is very mature, you could really set her on the righteous path with [dune ](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/44767458-dune?ref=nav_sb_ss_1_4)lol
The Dark is Rising series is perfect for this age
