Looking for books that have the same feel and kind of path or story for the main character, not just necessarily books about chess… if anyone has any suggestions I’d really appreciate it! Thanks! 🙂

“Magic for liars” might be a good fantasy book for you, it is about two sisters and one of them got to go to Hogwarts and become special and the other sister continued on without any special sauce. This is about the second sister.
Rabbits – you might just like this book as well. It’s surprisingly long and there is a very tragic beginning to this book and it becomes important later on in the book. It is about a person who becomes very obsessive, just like the protagonist from the Queen’s gambit. This book is not about drugs or mental illness though. Things get pretty dark for a while. The first third of the book was a struggle for me personally to get through but once I got to the second third I could not put this book down and rushed through it.
You might like this book called The Ninth house, it is a bestseller and it is pretty recent, it is about a secret society Yale where the main character is mixed in with all sorts of people who have all kinds of special achievements and accomplishments and her own accomplishment is somehow surviving her a misery to be old enough to go to college. But things are in motion and trouble follows her everywhere and she has to figure out how to get out of it. I liked this book so much that I have hard copies of this book and the new book that was released last year as well as the audiobook versions also.

Walter Tevis also wrote The Hustler, where he does for pool what he did for chess, he makes it incredibly intelligible. Fast Eddie is another complicated, talented main character!
