The southern books I can think of aren’t really “charming”, but they are very Southern. (Horror)
*The Toll* by Cherie Priest and *The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires* by Grady Hendrix

*Come Homeward Angel* by Tom Wolfe. The plot centers on a boy genius coming of age in a rough southern family in the early 1900s. The writing is literally jaw-dropping. Stylistically, it is similar to *The Great Gatsby*. But I’d take it any day over Fitzgerald — who greatly admired Wolfe.

Faulkner’s best is Absalom, Absalom but The Sound and The Fury may be an easier read.
