I watched the webseries and started reading it, and I am bowled over by how fat-free the writing is! I have never used the word 'crisp' to describe writing before, but honestly that is the word I kept thinking of.
I am 8 chapters in. He pulls you straight in, and then its non-stop 'things happening' and yet, it never feels rushed.
it was extremely pleasant to be treated with so much trust by the author. I was actually lost here and there, and needed to re-read what was going on, and look up several terms. But it was worth it.
I am a somewhat anxious and impatient reader, and Shogun has surpassed my unreasonable standards so far. I hope it continues this way..

Rodrigues knew he was trapped. “I have to trust you, Ingeles, and I hate trusting you. Go aft,” he said. He saw Blackthorne read what was behind his eyes and walk away. Then he changed his mind and called after him, “Hey, you arrogant pirate! Go with God!”
Blackthorne turned back gratefully. “And you, Spaniard!”
“Piss on all Spaniards and long live Portugal!”
“Steady as she goes!”
Rodrigues has got to go? Sure.
They made harbor but without Rodrigues. He was washed overboard when his lifeline snapped.
There. Rodrigues is gone!
