    Hi!
In both literature and cinema I always tend to gravitate towards darker, more macabre aesthetics and themes. I grew up reading horror books, but as my reading tastes developed, I’ve found a lot of genre fiction to be (for lack of a less negative term) shallow and “cheap”.
I desperately need some recommendations on high quality horror-adjacent literature, that could be considered art, not just entertainment.

Here are some authors I enjoy that fit what I am looking for: Thomas Ligotti, E. A. Poe, Shirley Jackson, Cormac McCarthy, Mary Shelley, even some of Calvino and Borges

    Thanks a lot!

Beloved by Toni Morrison maybe? It’s not horror horror but it’s technically a ghost story and absolutely haunting due to its subject manner.
