As the title says, what book did you get recommended that you hated and why? Mine definitely has to be “The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle.” I liked the concept, but the gross fat phobia and just the dragging out of it made me DNF! They could have done so much more with it!

    1. Hate is stronger than how I felt, but I just didn’t see anything in My Struggle by Karl Ove Knausgard. The idea of trying to write the protagonist’s full life is interesting in theory. In reality, you get fifty pages of a 6 year old trying to decide whether or not to go outside or stay in their room.

The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah was just engaging enough for me to finish it, but the prose was stunningly bad, generic and so repetitive in the descriptions of the landscape and characters. The plot was poorly paced and took a random turn in the last third that didn’t really make sense other than to make the characters suffer more and ramp up the melodrama. Character development was nonexistent except that the main character got better at suffering.

Flowers for Algernon. It’s so often recommended on here so I read it and felt it was super boring.
