I picked this as my Halloween book because of all the reviews of how good and original the haunted house in this novel is and so far I ain’t have’n non of it. I’m only on chapter ten but I’m fed up. Every review has called this novel original, but “Frankenstein-ing” every cliché under the sun into one cover, is last time I checked, called a parody. Also, one of the greatest clichés of the modern haunted house story is it’s underlying psychological drama and elements. Underlying! This novel takes it to the for front and it feels like two plots are fighting each other for the spotlight and neither is particularly interesting. I’m still on chapter 10 and, what, there was CA in Katherine’s childhood which is why she is estranged with her father, or Hal did return but went into the evil basement, idk I’m just guessing. Also I can’t get pass how obnoxious Katherine is. For a character that is nearly 40 and accomplished such a career, why is she written like a little toddler? And the supernatural bits are mediocre at best. Am I jumping the gun here or do I have this book’s number?
