I was an avid reader when I was a child all the way into high school. I’d have random bursts of reading throughout college and post-college.

But with social media, video games, the trials & tribulations of adulthood… I find it difficult to immerse myself in a book now. Especially with the existence of TikTok, where I get my inspiration for beauty/makeup (current obsession), cleaning, cat videos…

In the past, when I’d find myself in a funk, I’d pick up a Chuck Palahniuk book because of the writing style and sudden twists. They kept me captivated. I even went on his website and went through his recommended books, and I remember loving Geek Love and The Contortionist’s Handbook.

Most recently, I read Tender is the Flesh, and it was honestly so gross but in the most interesting way. But I’m hoping to not go down that path of relying on such stories to get myself back into reading.

Has anyone here experienced something similar? Or have similar interests as mine and could recommend me something? I’m tempted to reread a book just to get back into things but it’s hard when I remember the ending/twist.

    1. i’m currently in the same situation as you. i learned that deleting tiktok and instagram helped me a lot with my attention span and allows me to focus a lot more now. and recently (yesterday to be more specific) i read Matilda by Roald Dahl in my backyard, and i realized how fun it is to read. I’m way above the age limit to be reading Roald Dahl books lol, but it was a cool way to ease myself into reading again. i suggest to block notifications on your phone who spam notifications if you’re not ready to delete those apps, so you’re able to concentrate more and not pick up your phone as much. I also suggest reading easy and digestible books. creating a specific time of when you want to read helps a lot.
